There are a number of legendary and mysterious monsters reported in different parts of Maryland. The term cryptid and cryptic comes from cryptozoology, which is the search for hidden animals. These are creatures that have not been proven to exist by science, or are thought to have gone extinct, like dinosaurs. But if people have reported seeing them in the modern age and someone is investigating certain sightings, then they can be considered cryptid creatures and part of the paranormal. Cryptics include creatures like Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and the Jersey Devil.
Bigfoot has also been seen in Harford
County. In the 1990s some hunters in
the woods saw a large shape with brown hair shaking a tree. It stood upright
and it was not a bear.
Sasquatch have been spotted in the Allegheny Mountains in Western Maryland. Near Hagerstown, footprints were found and a call was heard in the year 2000.
The
Shady Side Swamp Monster is similar to Bigfoot.
The beast was seen late at night in a backyard in Ann Arundel
County back in the 1980s. In the 2000s, a
sailor in the woods heard screams and saw
something dark with hair and extremely tall!
And the
Sykesville Monster is another Sasquatch type creature, in Carroll County. Sightings of the beast have been sense the
1970s. Back in the 1980s, a scream and large footstep sounds were heard in that
area.
The legend of pig woman is a creature reported in Elkton, Rising Sun and there was the pig lady bridge in North East. The legend is supposed to be a woman with the head of a pig. Pig woman is said to cause cars to stop running, then the beast reportedly attacks cars and people with an axe. The pig lady bridge in North East was washed out by a storm in the early 2000s. The thing could be more of a supernatural being, rather than a cryptic animal.
The snallygaster is a dragon like creature reported in the Middletown area of Frederick County. The newspaper reports of sightings were published back in the early twentieth century. It is similar to a wyvern, which is a mythical dragon like monster that stands upright on two legs. The Jersey Devil has also been seen in Maryland around the beginning of the 1900s.
There is the Goatman in Beltsville, Prince Georges County. It is said to look like a man with the head and horns of a goat. There have been sightings from the late 1950’s and early 1960’s near Bowie, Maryland. It is similar to a krampus, which is a mythical humanoid with horns from Europe at Christmas time.
I know firsthand that thunderbirds have been seen here. I saw a giant featured bird fly over my home outside of Elkton when I was a young boy in the mid 1960s.
And possibly
the most notable of the Maryland monsters may be Chessie. It is a legendary sea
monster in the Chesapeake Bay, sighted in the 1970’s around Calvert Cliffs in
southern Maryland and near Kent Island off Queen Anne’s County in the
1980’s. Chessie is thought to be like
the Loch Ness Monster of Scotland. But it is not a lake monster, more of a sea
serpent, possibly from the Atlantic Ocean. Chessie looks more like a leviathan,
which is a mythological sea serpent monster from different cultures. The
leviathan in some mythologies is also like a dragon.
There is another
similar creature off the Pacific west coast of the U.S. called a Caddy or
Cadborosaurus, which is also a long serpent with a large head.
There have been many sightings of mysterious monsters in different parts of Maryland over the years, decades and centuries. Each county has its own fair share of legendary creatures roaming the woods and towns at night.
