There are
mythical reptile like monsters with wings in folklore. One of these
creatures is the dragon. Stories about them come from the middle ages. Dragons
are large serpent like monsters with wings and they are said to be able to
breathe fire.
The legend of the snallygaster, in Western Maryland, is a dragon like beast.
Another mythical creature is the gargoyle. They are reptilian like with horns and bat like wings. Some have goat
like heads and are said to be a kind of demon.
There is an extinct animal that also
fits the description of a flying reptile. The pterosaur was a winged reptile
that lived at the time of the dinosaurs. They have found fossils of pterosaurs and they are
known to science to have really existed about 220 to 65 million years ago.
These flying reptiles grew wing spans up to 35 feet.
Incredibly these monsters are still seen
today in different parts of the world. In New Guinea, gigantic flying creatures
looking just like the prehistoric reptiles have been seen by many people. These pterosaurs are reported to have bioluminescence capability. They can generate
their own light and shine and glow while flying the night sky.
Sometimes thunderbird reports are
described as looking like pterosaurs, more like a lizard in the air, than a huge
bird. Huge dragons with long tales have sighted in water in different
places. One source of
dragon reports in the distant past could be lake monsters in northern Europe.
Like pterosaurs, plesiosaurs are thought to have went extinct millions of years
ago. They were very large retiles with long necks, tales and fins that lived in
the water. If plesiosaurs were still alive today in certain lakes, they could
be seen as a type of dragon.
Is there any connection between pterosaurs, gargoyles and dragons? They are all described as flying reptiles
with wings. The story of dragons being fire breathing could come from the light
emitted by a pterosaur, if they were still alive in this day and age. There is
evidence that supports the theory that dinosaurs evolved into modern day birds.
Could some kind of prehistoric animal have evolved into modern day dragons? Could there be an undiscovered
giant relative to a bat flying around? Could pterosaurs have changed through
time and become something that looks like a gargoyle?
The answer will only be found when one
of these creatures is discovered and proven to be the descendant of something
from the very distant past. It is possible that some of these myths have a
basis in reality. There could be an actual living winged, cryptid creature that
has evolved and is responsible for reports of dragons in the modern age.
The pterosaur has no known evolutionary
predecessor. Scientist do not know what animal they came from.
